Three friends shouted three different themes at once!
"Space!" yelled Amina.
"Jungle safari!" shouted Diego.
"Art studio!" called Priya.
The paper poster on the picnic table jumped. Markers rolled away. Amina's little brother, Tariq, covered his ears and giggled.
It was a sunny Saturday in Amina's backyard. The lemon tree smelled bright and sweet. A breeze ruffled the tablecloth. Amina, Diego, and Priya always shared a birthday month. They always planned one big party.
This year, they wanted different things. Amina spread out rocket pictures. Diego held leaves and green string. Priya set paint swatches by the cups.
Amina tapped a photo. "We could build a rocket!" she said. "We could count down and blast off."
Diego pointed to his vines. "We could hang these like the rainforest," he said. "We could drum like explorers."
Priya lifted a tiny canvas. "We could paint," she said. "Big, bright colors on easels."
They talked faster and louder. "Stars!" said Amina.
"Vines!" said Diego.
"Brushes!" said Priya.
Their voices bumped into each other. No one changed their mind. The poster slid and tore down the middle with a rip.
Everyone went still. A bird chirped. The torn edge looked like a frown.
Tariq peered over the table. "Why not all of them?" he asked.
The friends shook their heads. "How would that even work?" Amina said. She felt her face get hot. Her hands curled around a marker.
Amina looked at her friends. Diego's shoulders drooped. Priya picked at a sticker. The rip in the poster tugged at Amina's chest.
She took a slow breath. Her fingers relaxed. "Wait," she said. "Let's try something."
She passed out three clean papers. "Draw a map of your dream party. Just simple shapes. Where things go."
Diego blinked, then smiled a little. "Okay." He drew a big curvy path and X marks.
Priya nodded. "I can do shapes." She sketched squares for tables and circles for paint cups.
Amina drew a tall rectangle for a rocket and dotted lines for a countdown path.
They set the papers on the grass. A corner of Diego's path slid next to Priya's tables. Amina's rocket edge touched both.
Priya tilted her page. The edges fit together like puzzle pieces.
Diego's eyes went wide. "Whoa. It lines up!"
Amina grinned. Her heart did a tiny hop. "Look! We can put the rocket by the vines. The art tables can be near both."
Priya's braid bounced as she nodded. "We can paint animals with stars. And make signs with leaves and constellations."
Tariq clapped. "A mash-up!"
All week, the friends worked after school. They met at the park pavilion. The air smelled like fresh grass. Sunlight made little sparkles on the pond.
They stacked cardboard boxes. "Rocket-ship treehouse," Amina said, tapping the box nose cone.
Priya painted giant green leaves on the sides. She sprinkled tiny white dots for stars.
Diego tied green streamers from pole to pole. "Vine Galaxy Trail," he said. He added glow-in-the-dark stickers along the path.
They set up stations. One table held mini canvases and brushes. A sign read, "Paint Starry Animals." Another spot had a drum circle. The bucket drums thumped softly as they tested them.
"Drum a countdown!" Diego said. "Five, four, three-"
"-two, one, launch!" Amina finished. She sent a paper airplane soaring.
Priya lettered a birthday banner. She drew a tiger in a spacesuit holding a paintbrush. Its tail curled like a question mark.
They made scavenger hunt cards. "Find a glow sticker star," Amina wrote. "Tap a jungle beat for ten counts," Diego added. "Paint a tiny comet whisker," Priya wrote, smiling.
On party day, clouds puffed like marshmallows. Kids ran toward the pavilion. Laughter swirled like ribbon.
Then a gust of wind whooshed through. The rocket sign tipped over. A wet brush rolled off a table and smudged purple paint across a leaf.
The three friends looked at each other. No one pointed. No one sighed.
"I've got the sign," Diego said. He tied it with extra vine string and tugged it tight.
"I can fix the paint," Priya said. Her brush flicked lightly. The smudge became a bright comet swoosh.
"Extra spacey!" Amina said. She pressed more glow stickers around the comet. They twinkled even in daylight.
Guests arrived and stared, then laughed and clapped. "Mission Jungle Art!" someone shouted.
The scavenger hunt began. Kids painted starry tigers and moon owls. They followed the Vine Galaxy Trail under fluttering green. They drummed a booming countdown and launched paper rockets into the soft grass.
Parents snapped photos. Music and chatter filled the air. The rocket-ship treehouse stood tall and silly, with leafy stars and stripy windows.
When it was cake time, everyone gathered. The cake had sugar leaves, tiny stars, and rainbow swirls. The three friends leaned in together.
"Ready?" Amina whispered.
"Ready," said Diego.
"Ready," said Priya.
They blew out the candles at the same time. Smoke curled up like a small gray ribbon. Cheers rose up around them.
Amina looked at the banner, the trails, and the rocket. She felt light, like a paper plane in a friendly wind. She squeezed Diego's and Priya's hands.
"We didn't have to pick just one," she said softly, smiling.
Diego laughed. "We picked all of them."
Priya tipped her brush like a tiny salute. "Best mash-up ever."
Tariq popped up from behind the table. "I knew it!" he said, crumbs on his cheek. They all giggled.
Sun warmed their faces. The signs held steady. The glow stickers winked. And their great, bright party kept on shining.
How four friends turned leftovers into wonder
