The Not-Fine City Quest
Some bridges sway more on the inside

Kaiya the hermit crab felt squished.
Her shell pinched her soft belly when she turned. She tucked her claws and hid behind wavy seaweed. Bubbles popped around her like giggles, but she did not move. Today was Shell Swap day at the reef.
All around the sunny tide pool, creatures bustled. Snails slid in lines. Shrimps clicked like tiny drums. Empty shells gleamed in a sharing circle. Sunlight sprinkled the water like gold sand.
Kaiya peeped out and pulled back fast. A crab with a wide shell strutted by. Two little gobies played tag near a coral arch. Kaiya's shell pressed tighter, and she wiggled in place.
"Hey, Kaiya!" called Bubbles the clownfish, zipping past. His orange stripes flashed like flags. "You hiding or hunting?"
Kaiya inched from the seaweed. "Just looking," she said, very quiet. Her eye stalks tilted left, then right.
Starla the sea star slid over the sand. She moved slow and steady, like a calming song. "We saw you peeking," she said. "Want company?"
Tiko the tiny sea turtle paddled up, gentle as driftwood. His flippers swayed in a smooth beat. "We can make a plan," he said. "Safe and easy."
Kaiya's legs tapped the sand in a shaky rhythm. "What if I wobble?" she whispered. "What if I choose wrong?"
Bubbles puffed a soft stream. "Then we laugh and try again," he said. "No big splash."
Starla lifted one sandy arm like a pointer. "I can show choices," she said. "Nice and clear."
Tiko nodded. "I'll watch the paths," he said. "No rush. No pressure."
They huddled near a patch of bright coral. Sunbeams warmed Kaiya's back. Bubbles drew a circle in the sand with his tail. "Game time," he announced. "We call it Try Three."
"Three shells, three tries," Starla added. "You pick at the end."
Kaiya felt the pinch again and winced. She looked at her friends. Their faces were calm, like slow tides. "Okay," she said. "Try Three."
Bubbles zipped upward to scout. "Shell at two coral fingers!" he called. Starla lifted an arm that way. Tiko swam low, checking for urchins and tangles.
The first shell sat in a sunny patch. It was brown with whorls like cinnamon rolls. Kaiya touched it with one claw. She eased out of her old shell and tried it.
She took one step. Then two. The shell dragged like a rock in mud. Sand puffed under her legs.
"It's heavy," she said, breathing hard. She slid back into her old shell with a tiny grunt. Bubbles made a silly drumroll with his fins. Kaiya smiled a little.
"Next," said Starla, and pointed again. The second shell shone like moonlight, but a thin crack ran along the curve. Tiko tapped the crack with his beak.
"Pretty, but not strong," he said. "Waves could split it."
Kaiya stroked the smooth side. She wanted pretty. She also wanted safe. She shook her head and backed away.
A soft current rolled through the reef. Something bright tumbled with it. A shiny spiral shell spun past like a tiny lighthouse. It bumped a rock and rested in a sandy dip.
Kaiya's feelers perked. She leaned forward, then froze. The water hummed in her ears. Other creatures swam by, busy and bright.
Tiko floated beside her. "Small brave steps," he said, voice low and easy. "Deep breath. Count three bubbles. Scuttle forward."
Bubbles blew three tiny bubbles in a neat line. Pop. Pop. Pop. Starla hummed a steady beat, like a drum under the sand.
Kaiya filled her chest with cool water. She felt it slide in and out. "One," she whispered, watching a bubble rise. "Two." Her legs uncurled. "Three." She scuttled.
The shiny spiral waited, quiet as a secret. Kaiya checked the rim and peered inside. No crack. No sand clogs. Light and roomy.
She slipped from her old shell and into the new one. At first it felt huge, like a cave of twirls. She almost scooted back out.
The current tugged her side, and her legs wobbled. She paused and remembered. Deep breath. Three bubbles. Scuttle deeper.
The twist of the shell hugged her shape at last. Not too tight. Not too loose. She took three steps, then four. The shell moved with her like a dance partner.
Bubbles looped around her in a fast circle. "It fits!" he cheered, tail flicking sparks of light.
Starla patted the sand in a happy thump. "Strong and bright," she said. "You chose with care."
Tiko nodded, eyes warm. "You did it," he said. "You steered the whole time."
Kaiya looked around the reef. Empty shells lay here and there like tiny homes for later. They no longer seemed spooky or sad. They looked like footprints of growing.
Back at the Shell Swap, Kaiya set her old shell in the sharing circle. It sat small and neat between two bigger ones. A tiny crab scurried over and peeked inside.
The little crab's eyes shone. It wiggled with joy and crawled in. The shell fit like a snug hug. The crab beamed at Kaiya and did a happy twirl.
Warmth spread through Kaiya like sunshine on sand. Her claws relaxed. Her new shell gleamed when she turned.
"Parade time!" Bubbles called. "One lap around the pool!"
Creatures lined up, laughing and clacking. Kaiya stepped to the front. Her legs tapped a brave, bright beat.
The current brushed her side again. A flutter rose in her chest. She breathed in, watched three bubbles lift, and scuttled on.
Starla kept the rhythm. Tiko guided the path. Bubbles whooped and made swirling trails.
Kaiya led the parade past coral fans and dancing grass. Her shell flashed like a friendly star. With each small step, the tide pool felt bigger and kinder.
When the lap was done, she spun in one last twirl. She touched her new shell and grinned. It wasn't just new space. It felt like her.
