Ivy and the Lost Playground Dollar

A Sunny Recess, a Shiny Find, and a Good Heart

Ivy and the Lost Playground Dollar

When Ivy spotted a shiny dollar near the sandbox, her fingers tingled with the promise of something fun. The sun made the green paper sparkle as if it were a secret treasure hidden just for her. Beside her, the warm sand slid between Ivy's sneakers. Kids zoomed down the slide and jumped off swings, while the smell of fresh grass tickled Ivy's nose. She bent down, pinched the dollar between her fingers, and felt her heart hop like a happy frog. She pictured herself at the bookstore, handing over the dollar with a big grin and getting that sticker book filled with bright, puffy stars and cats wearing hats. Ivy folded the dollar and tucked it in her pocket, her cheeks growing warm with excitement. ## A Wobbly Feeling The bell rang and kids lined up, chattering and brushing sand off their clothes. Ivy glanced at the classroom's lost-and-found shelf. Socks, water bottles, and someone's favorite red scarf sat there, waiting to be claimed. She thought about slipping the dollar onto the shelf but clutched it tighter instead. Later, Ivy's big sister, Maya, came to pick her up after school. Maya's hair was dark and curly, just like Ivy's but worn loose. Maya grinned. 'Ready, sticker collector?' Ivy nodded, the dollar quiet and safe in her pocket. As they walked past the playground, Maya asked, 'You look thoughtful, Peanut! Anything new today?' Ivy's fingers curled around the dollar. She wanted to tell Maya about her secret find. But when Maya looked at her, Ivy just shrugged. The dollar felt heavier now, and a small, worried knot rolled around her tummy. Near the swings, a group of kids whispered, 'Mateo lost his lunch money! He can't buy a sandwich.' Ivy peeked at a boy sitting under a tree, his shoes digging little craters in the dust. He was quiet, his mouth turned down at the corners. ## Choosing What's Right Maya crouched so her eyes met Ivy's. 'Once, I lost a tiny silver ring at school. I felt sad for days. But a girl in my class found it and gave it back. That was the best feeling.' Ivy pressed her shoe into the sand. The dollar bill crinkled in her pocket. She thought about losing her favorite strawberry hair clip-how her heart would thump with worry. She looked at Maya and whispered, 'I found a dollar. By the sandbox.' Maya smiled gently. 'What do you think you should do?' Ivy looked at the lost-and-found shelf, then at Mateo near the tree. She nodded and marched up to her teacher. 'Miss Lopez, I found this dollar outside. Did someone lose it?' Miss Lopez thought for a moment, then called out, 'Did anyone lose money today?' Mateo shuffled over, hope bright in his eyes. 'I lost a dollar at lunch.' Ivy's cheeks were warm and pink as she handed the dollar to Mateo. His hands shook a little when he took it. 'Thank you, Ivy!' Mateo beamed, his smile shining as bright as the sun. Ivy felt as if a small happiness balloon was floating in her chest, lifting the knot and carrying it away. She grinned, and Maya squeezed her hand gently. On the walk home, Ivy skipped through the puddles from yesterday's rain. Her sticker dreams could wait-her heart felt even better than a whole book of puffy stars.
