Luna Learns a New Playground Game

A warm story of courage and friendship on the playground

Luna Learns a New Playground Game

Luna lined up her chalk pieces under the painted mural. Recess meant hopscotch and tag with her best friends-just like always. She liked how her routine felt soft and safe, like her favorite blanket. Today the sun sparkled on puddles. Luna hopped in little skips, giggling with her friends. She waved to Amara and Jayden as they dashed over. Just on the edge of the playground, Luna saw Mateo. His shiny blue wheelchair had stickers of rockets and rainbows. Mateo watched the games, fingers drumming on his lap. Luna thought, Maybe he likes to watch. Anyway, hopscotch only worked when everyone could jump. ## A New Game in the Rain The next day, rain tapped the classroom windows. Luna pressed her nose to the glass, missing the laughter outside. When the sun finally peeked through, class rushed out for recess. This time, Luna saw Mateo rolling a small chalkboard out to the sidewalk, a bag of beanbags hooked to his chair. 'Want to play a new game?' Mateo asked, his eyes bright. 'It's called Circle Switch. Everyone can join.' Luna shuffled her shoes, curious but worried. She liked hopscotch and tag. New games sometimes felt strange. 'How do you play?' Luna asked, her voice low. Mateo drew a big circle in chalk. He handed out beanbags-red, blue, yellow, green. 'We sit or stand in the circle. When I call a color, you pass your beanbag to the next person. If your beanbag matches the color I call, you switch spots!' Amara clapped her hands. Jayden bounced on his toes. Luna bit her lip, but she sat in the circle too. Warm sunshine wiped away the last of the puddles. ## Luna Tries Something New Mateo called, 'Yellow!' Luna raced to swing her beanbag to Amara. Everyone giggled as the circle twisted and grew wiggly. Mateo spun his wheelchair, grinning when he caught the red beanbag. Luna's heart thumped with surprise-she liked this game! It was new, but it was silly and fun. Mid-game, Luna glanced at Mateo. He was part of the circle, laughing and playing with everyone. Suddenly Luna felt a twist in her tummy. All this time, she'd never asked Mateo to play her games. She'd kept her circle too small. After the game, Luna found Mateo by the mural. She tugged her sleeve and looked at her shoes. 'I'm sorry for not inviting you before. Your game is amazing.' Mateo smiled wide. 'Thanks for playing! Want to show the others?' Luna nodded. 'Can we make hopscotch work for wheels?' Mateo's eyes lit up. 'Let's try.' ## Playground Changes All week, Luna and Mateo added new chalk squares, wide enough for rolling or hopping. They cheered as Amara zoomed along on a scooter. For tag, they used colored scarves and new rules so everyone chased and tricked together. Some kids needed help learning the new games. Luna showed them, patient and kind. The air buzzed with laughter. More and more children joined until the playground was a swirl of color and happy shouts. On Friday, Luna led the biggest Circle Switch game yet. The whole circle stretched wide, with Mateo in his wheelchair on one side and Luna grinning on the other. She felt proud. Her circle-and her heart-had grown bigger than she ever guessed. The playground stayed bright and full of joy. And Luna knew she could be brave and kind, all at once.
