Mia felt a tiny storm in her chest when she saw her best friend talking to someone new. She stopped at the edge of the playground, clutching her drawings and biting her lip. The sun was bright on the swings and the big green slide, but all she noticed was Ava, giggling with a boy she'd never seen before. Mia's World Mia loved two things: making up games with Ava and drawing picture stories under the big tree. Every day after school, she and Ava raced to the playground. They swung the highest, made sand castles, and giggled about super squirrels and magical cakes. But today, Ava wasn't at the swings alone. A boy with wind-tossed hair and silly orange sneakers stood nearby. Ava waved. 'Mia, come meet Sam!' Mia shuffled closer, her sneakers dragging. Sam grinned. 'Hi! I love your rainbow backpack.' Ava bounced. 'Sam's new! He just moved here.' Sam pointed to the hill. 'Want to fly a kite with me?' Mia mumbled, 'You two go. I'll just draw.' She sank onto a swing and watched. Ava and Sam laughed as the kite twisted in the sky. Mia's chest felt tight. What if Ava wanted Sam as her only friend? A Game Goes Wrong Suddenly, the kite dove-thump!-right into the sandbox. Sam's smile faded. He tugged the string, but the kite wouldn't budge. Ava frowned. 'Maybe it's broken.' Mia peeked from her drawing. She remembered when her own kite crashed last spring. Ava hadn't laughed. She'd rushed over and cheered Mia up. Mia looked at Ava, then at Sam's drooping shoulders. She took a wobbly breath. Ava had been brave for her before. Maybe she could be brave now. A Brave Step Mia slid off the swing and marched to the sandbox. 'Let's fix it together,' she said. 'I know a trick!' Sam's eyes lit up. Together, they wiggled the kite free. Mia showed them how to hold the string steady and run fast. Ava whooped as the kite soared, colors flashing against the blue sky. Sam laughed so much he almost tripped. New Laughter, New Games After the kite, Sam pulled out a rubber chicken. 'Chicken tag!' he yelled, and Mia giggled. They ran around trees, screeching with joy. Sam and Ava didn't know the super squirrel game, so Mia taught them. Sam made up silly voices, and Ava tumbled in the grass. The laughter grew louder, bouncing from the swings to the sandbox. When Mia looked around, she felt warm inside, like sitting near a campfire. She grinned at Ava, who squeezed her hand. Sam tossed Mia the chicken and cheered. Just before heading home, Ava whispered, 'This was the best day.' Sam nodded. 'I'm glad I met you both!' Mia's storm had melted away. She felt brave and light, with two friends now instead of one-and way more fun than she ever imagined. As the sun dipped lower, the three walked home together, ready for a new game tomorrow.
