Pip sat on the snowy shore, his round belly pressed into the soft white fluff. The sun sparkled on the ocean, making it glimmer like a giant blue jewel. Giggling, his friends slid into the shallow waves, flipping and flapping with happy feet. Pip tucked his head, watching them play. He wanted to join so much, but just thinking about the cold, swirling water made his tummy twist into a knot. Every morning, Pip's friends called to him. 'Come splash, Pip! The water's bouncy today!' Tiny Neve did a perfect little somersault. Max flapped water up, making shimmering rainbows in the sun. Pip waved back, giving a small smile. He loved watching, but every time he stood up, his feet felt stuck like frozen shells. Luna, Pip's oldest friend, wobbled over and sat beside him. She was the gentlest penguin, soft and calm. The white spot on Luna's chest looked like a shining cloud. 'It's okay to wait,' Luna said, tapping Pip's flipper. 'I was scared once, too. I took one small step at a time. You can, too. Maybe today, just watch. Maybe tomorrow, try a toe.' Pip listened. He liked the sound of Luna's voice-soft as snowflakes. He peeked at the ocean and saw friendly waves, not big swirls. The others noticed and waddled over, shaking droplets all around him in a cool, sparkling shower. 'You can do it, Pip!' they cheered. 'We'll be right here!' Pip took a long, wobbly breath. His heart felt fluttery, but also a bit bright. 'Maybe... I'll try a tiny step,' he whispered to Luna. He scooted forward, snow crunching under his small belly. Step by little step, Pip shuffled to the edge where the snow met the water. He closed his eyes, just for a second. Then, holding Luna's flipper tight, he stretched out one small toe. The chilly water slipped over his foot. But instead of feeling icy and scary, it gave him a gentle, bubbly tickle-like a tiny sea giggle! Pip opened his eyes in surprise. 'It's... not so bad!' Pip gasped. His friends clapped their flippers, making happy clacking sounds. Even Max, who could never sit still, bounced beside him, grinning. Luna squeezed Pip's flipper gently. 'Want to try another toe?' she smiled. Pip nodded, cheeks warm with pride. He dipped in his other foot, then both! The soft waves brushed him, cool and gentle. He waddled out a little farther. Water whooshed! Pip giggled and wiggled his feet. In the waves, Pip's friends circled him, cheering louder than ever. His heart felt light as a puff of snow. He tried a little splash, then a tiny jump, and laughed when droplets tickled his belly. Soon, Pip was gliding right beside Neve and Max, spinning in the friendly sea. Luna clapped and joined in, her white chest shining in the sun. The ocean was wide, but now it felt like a special place-just right for splashing penguins. As the sun sparkled high, Pip looked back at the snowy beach. He'd done something he never thought he could. His tummy still felt fluttery, but it was the happy kind now-the excited flutter that comes before something wonderful. Pip flapped his wings and shouted, 'Thank you, Luna! Thank you, friends!' He knew he was still careful, still Pip. But now, he was brave, too. And sometimes, being brave started with just one little step-followed by a happy splash.
