Zara loved splashes of color-but she did not love cleaning up. Every art time at Maple Elementary, her hands fluttered like happy birds as she dipped her brush into bright blue, sunshine yellow, or sparkly magenta. Zara's dragons wore hats. Her trees zinged with purple. All around, sunlight danced on the art corner's windowsill, making the rows of paint jars gleam. Today, Zara had her favorite paintbrush-the one with the shiny blue handle, soft and perfect for making curly clouds. As soon as Ms. Patel, the art teacher, said, 'Paint what makes you smile!' Zara's brush swooped across the paper like a tiny dancer. But after a while, Ms. Patel called, 'Clean up, everyone!' Zara stacked her papers in a wobbly pile and left her brush poking out of a jar. She hurried outside, chasing her friends Aiden and Priya to the swings, never looking back at the art table. Her cubby stayed messy, too. Peeking out were crumpled drawings and dried-out markers. After recess, Zara returned for her very best brush. She searched her smudged art tray-no brush. She checked her cubby, poking around glue bottles and torn stickers-no luck. Zara's stomach twisted tight, like she'd swallowed a tangled ribbon. Where could it be? Aiden noticed Zara's frown as she shuffled her sneakers on the tile. 'Want help, Zara?' he asked brightly. Priya peered under the table, brushing away yellow scraps with her fingers. Ms. Patel smiled and said gently, 'Let's see if we can find it together. Did you put it where it belongs?' Zara shook her head, cheeks pink. 'I think I left it out ... but I don't remember.' They searched the whole art corner. Paint jars were scattered and some lids were missing. Brushes poked from mugs, and paper was stuffed in every corner. The mess made it hard to see what belonged where. Priya lifted one pile-no brush. Aiden rummaged through a basket-just one broken crayon. A tiny drip of blue paint trailed from the edge of the table to a jumble of papers in the sunny corner. Zara squatted down, her heart flapping like butterfly wings. She lifted a wrinkled piece of cardboard ... And there it was: her brush! The blue handle peeked out between the papers. Its bristles were a little squished, but she hugged it to her chest, beaming. Ms. Patel placed a warm hand on Zara's shoulder. 'Found it, I see.' Zara nodded, thinking about all the messy corners and missing lids. She glanced at her friends, who looked a little tired after all the searching. She squeezed her brush, then took a slow breath. 'I want to help clean up tomorrow-and every day,' Zara said. 'It's hard to find things when it's messy. Maybe ... maybe we could make a spot for everyone's brushes?' Aiden grinned. 'Let's make it bright! Stickers and colors!' Priya nodded, her ponytail bouncing. 'I can draw labels for the jars! I love drawing stars.' That afternoon, the art corner changed. Zara and her friends lined up the brushes in a big coffee can, then stuck rainbow stickers to each jar. The brushes stood in neat little rows, their handles shining in the sun. Ms. Patel brought extra labels, and Zara wrote her name on one, laughing when the marker stained her finger. By cleanup time the next day, Zara stacked her papers, put the lids on her paints, and slid her brush-blue handle gleaming-right into the new brush-holder. Her friends helped too, and even Ms. Patel joined in, humming a tune. Painting time was still busy and bright. There were still purple trees and zigzagging dragons. But now, everyone could find what they needed, and smiles came a little easier when it was time to tidy up. Zara's paintbrush never went missing again, and the art corner sparkled with color-and care-from then on.
