Luna Learns a New Playground Game

Luna is seven and she likes things that are familiar. Every recess she gathers the same friends for hopscotch and tag. The new kid, Mateo, uses a wheelchair and watches from the edge of the playground. Luna doesn't mean to leave anyone out; she just likes the way her games always go. One rainy week, Mateo rolls up a small chalkboard and asks if he can teach a game called Circle Switch. Luna frowns at first because Circle Switch looks different from jump-rope and tag. Mateo shows how players move colored beanbags and call out a color so everyone gets a turn without running. The game fits the sidewalk, so wheelchair wheels can join the circle too. As Luna tries the new move, she discovers how much fun it is when everyone plays together. She realizes she has been holding on to old routines and missing chances to include new friends. Luna apologizes to Mateo and invites him to show other classmates the game. By the end of the week, Luna helps make small changes to other playground games so more children can join. She learns that trying something new can be brave and kind. The story ends with a bright recess where laughter spreads across the playground — and Luna feels proud to play in a circle that includes everyone.
