Grace Learns to Share the Lead

A Week of Waiting and Wonder in Room 2B

Grace Learns to Share the Lead

Grace wanted to be line leader every single day. She loved the feeling of being first, holding her chin high, and opening the classroom door with a big, proud smile. In Room 2B, Grace's excitement bubbled every morning. She always hurried to hang her backpack and reach the door, hoping Ms. Rivera would choose her again. But one Monday, Ms. Rivera rolled out a new chart and stuck it to the wall. The chart was covered with bright paper, and a little sticker shone next to each student's name. 'We'll all get a turn to lead,' Ms. Rivera said, tapping the chart. 'Every day, someone new will go first.' Grace's heart dipped. She liked being line leader so much! But she tried to smile and clap with everyone else. For the first few days, Grace watched the chart closely. She reminded Ms. Rivera, 'Is it my turn yet?' She scooted closer to the door, just in case. On Tuesday, she even whispered, 'I'm ready again!' But the chart didn't change. Every morning, another friend's sticker sparkled. Mateo gently took the lead, his glasses sliding down his nose. Naomi grinned with a missing tooth, marching in front. And shy Amira, on her first week, stepped up with shaking hands. Sometimes, Grace tapped her foot and tried to make her smile big and patient. But she saw friends glancing her way. Mateo's eyebrows wriggled. Amira looked worried. Grace wondered if they spotted her trying to hurry to the front, just a little. On Thursday, Grace's body buzzed with waiting. At recess, she lined up, not at the front, but in the middle. She watched how Naomi chirped a cheerful hello to everyone behind her. She saw Mateo pause and hold the heavy hallway door until even the last kindergartner from next door had shuffled through. Amira, quiet as a mouse, looked grateful when Naomi winked at her before stepping forward. Grace felt a soft itch in her heart. She waved at Amira and got a shy wave back. She began to think... Maybe she could make the line extra special on her turn. She tried walking quietly, matching heels with toes. She began humming a sweet tune, thinking, 'This would make lining up more fun!' On Friday, Grace's turn finally came. Her name glittered on the chart, and Ms. Rivera placed the shiniest sticker right beside it. Grace took a deep breath. She bounced to the front, but instead of racing off, she called, 'Let's try a new song!' She started, 'Step, step, ready set, walking quietly, you bet!' Her friends joined in and giggled. Amira's face glowed with a smile. Grace slowed down so Amira could walk next to her. When they reached the door, Grace turned, bowed grandly, and held the door like Mateo did. Everyone clapped. Afterward, while packing up, Grace looked at the chart. Every name sparkled. She felt warm and happy, remembering the song and Amira's bright smile. 'I liked your song, Grace!' Naomi said. Mateo grinned and nodded. Grace realized something new. Waiting had been hard, but it let her see her friends-and make her turn even better. She couldn't wait for everyone to lead again, each with their special way.
