Mia and the Brave Bear Count

A calm breath, a brave squeeze

Mia and the Brave Bear Count

Mia's tummy fluttered as the dentist's door whooshed open.

She held Button, her small brown bear, very tight. Button's ear was worn soft from many hugs. Mia peeked at the shiny room and pressed closer to her big brother, Leo.

"Remember our plan?" Leo whispered. He wiggled Button's paw. "Squeeze, smell hot cocoa, and count to ten."

In the car, they had practiced. Leo made a little show, like a coach. "Breathe in like the cocoa is sweet and warm," he said. "Then out, slow like blowing on the cup." Mia had tried it, with Button snug in her lap.

Now the room felt bright and new. The chair was big and blue. Lights glowed like tiny suns. A poster of smiling dinosaurs grinned from the wall. A treasure chest sat by a plant, its lid a little open. Shiny stickers peeked out like jewels.

At the Bright Office

A friendly hygienist waved. She wore purple shoes with stars. "Hi, Mia! I'm Ms. Kay. I have silly tools," she said. "This one is the tooth tickler." She held up a small brush. "This one is a tiny mirror. And this one is the tiny shower." She showed a slim tube with a gentle spray.

Mia stared at the chair. "It goes up and down," Ms. Kay said. "Like a slow ride."

Mia's fingers wiggled. She wanted to hide behind Leo. Instead, Leo quietly squeezed Button's paw and counted on his fingers. One. Two. Three.

Mia nodded. She lifted her chin. "Okay," she said, very soft. She climbed onto the chair with Button on her tummy.

"The chair will rise," Ms. Kay said. "You can be the captain." She pressed a button. The chair hummed like a sleepy bee.

Mia did the brave bear count. She squeezed Button. She breathed in, like cocoa steam tickling her nose. She counted in her head. One, two, three, four. The hum was not loud. It sounded like a purring cat on a pillow. Five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten.

Her shoulders loosened a little. She blinked at the light. "That was okay," she whispered to Leo.

He gave her a thumbs-up. "Captain Mia," he said.

Counting with Button

Ms. Kay showed the tiny mirror. "Want to help?" she asked. "You can hold it and be my assistant."

Mia sat taller. She held the mirror by its little handle. She tilted it and saw her front teeth flash back at her. She grinned. "Assistant Mia," she said.

"We'll look at your teeth with my mirror now," Ms. Kay said. "I'll tell you everything I do."

Mia handed back the mirror and took a breath. She squeezed Button's paw. One to ten, slow and steady.

The mirror felt cool against her lip. Mia listened. The room's sounds blended into a soft hum. The air smelled like mint and oranges.

"Next is the tooth tickler," Ms. Kay said. "It brushes your teeth with sparkly paste."

Mia glanced at the brush. It spun like a tiny fan. She squeezed Button and began her count. One, two, three. The tickler buzzed. It was not sharp. It felt like a snail sliding over a stone. Four, five, six. The taste was berry-mint, sweet and clean. Seven, eight, nine, ten.

As she counted, Mia made a game. With each number, she painted her courage. One was red, warm and bold. Two was orange, bright like a sunrise. Three was yellow, sunny and soft. Four was green, like grass under bare feet. Five was blue, cool as a lake. Six was indigo, deep and quiet. Seven was purple, rich and royal. Eight, nine, ten filled the rainbow in her chest.

Ms. Kay nodded. "You're doing a careful job," she said.

Leo leaned close. "Treasure chest," he mouthed, and pointed. Stickers gleamed from the box. Dinosaurs, stars, kittens, and a round, shiny bear.

"Now the tiny shower," Ms. Kay said. "It rinses and then the straw slurps." She showed a little tube. "See? It's a thirsty straw." She made a funny slurp sound.

Mia giggled, then squeezed Button. She breathed in like cocoa, out like cool air. One, two, three. The water whooshed gently. The straw slurped like a silly fish. Four, five, six. Her toes wiggled in her sneakers. Seven, eight, nine, ten.

Mia blinked. "I'm okay," she said. The words felt warm.

"Time for the dentist," Ms. Kay said. "Dr. Patel will count your teeth."

Dr. Patel came in with a kind smile. His glasses twinkled. "Hello, Mia. I heard you're a great assistant," he said. "Open like a small alligator."

Mia opened wide. He checked gently and nodded. "Very nice," he said. "You did a brave, careful job." He held up a sticker. It had a teddy bear and shiny letters: Brave Bear Buddy.

Leo laughed softly. "Hey, I know that one."

Dr. Patel smiled at Leo. "Your brother used this same trick," he said. "Squeeze, breathe, count to ten. He was smaller then."

Mia's eyes widened. "You were nervous too?" she asked Leo.

Leo rubbed the back of his neck and grinned. "A little," he said. "Button helped me first."

Mia looked at Button, then at her sticker. The twisty feeling in her tummy melted into a warm fizz, like tiny bubbles.

She sat up. The room did not seem so big now. The lights looked friendly, like stars at a party.

At the treasure chest, Mia chose the Brave Bear Buddy sticker and a silver star. Leo picked a dinosaur for fun. They waved to Ms. Kay and Dr. Patel and walked out, side by side.

In the car, Mia stroked Button's ear. "I'm starting a Brave Bear Club," she said. "For our cousins. We will teach the count."

"How does it go?" Leo asked.

Mia smiled and breathed in, like sweet cocoa. "Squeeze, count to ten, make a rainbow," she said. "One small squeeze. One calm breath. Again and again."

Leo bumped her shoulder, gentle and proud. "Captain Mia," he said. "Club leader."

Mia giggled and pressed her sticker to her shirt. The warm fizz stayed. She watched the sunny street slide by and hugged Button close, ready for next time.
