Nia and the Library Renewal Surprise

A Warm Day, a Brave Fox, and a Little More Time

Nia and the Library Renewal Surprise

Nia cuddled on the soft rug in her favorite library corner. Sunlight made patterns on the floor as she turned another page of the picture book about a brave little fox. The fox was sneaking through the woods to help her friends-and Nia felt her own heart thump with each twist and turn. She loved brave animal stories. But as she checked the next page, her smile faded. A bright yellow slip peeked out from the back cover. 'Due tomorrow,' it read in neat letters. Nia's hands suddenly felt hot. There was no way she could finish the last few chapters before tomorrow! If someone else borrowed the book, she might never know how the fox's adventure ended. Nia peeked around the shelves. The library was calm and quiet. Other kids whispered, and a clock ticked softly by the puzzle table. Nia's mom picked out some cookbooks nearby, but Nia didn't want to bother her. Should she ask for help? The idea made her cheeks tingle. She bit her lip and started down the carpet toward the front desk, clutching the fox book close. The librarian, Ms. Vega, looked up with a kind smile. Her scarf showed tiny owls reading tiny books. 'Hello, Nia! Did you find something you like?' Ms. Vega asked gently, just like sunlight warming chilly fingers. Nia shuffled her shoes. 'Um, yes, but... it's due tomorrow. I'm not done.' Ms. Vega leaned over just a bit. 'Would you like to renew it? That means you can keep it longer.' Nia blinked. 'Renew?' Ms. Vega invited her behind the desk. Her chair squeaked gently as she sat. 'We use the computer to give you more days. Here, watch.' She showed Nia a bright blue button on the screen. It said, 'Renew.' Nia pressed it. With a cheerful bing, the date next to her book changed. 'There! Now you have two more weeks,' Ms. Vega said. Nia's shoulders relaxed. 'I can finish the fox's story!' 'You can-and you might like one of our 'Staff Picks' books too,' said Ms. Vega. She pointed to a short shelf by the window. The sign had sparkly letters and a funny dog sticker. Nia hadn't noticed it before. Ms. Vega walked her over. She gently tugged out a bright book with a squirrel on the cover. 'This one's about a small squirrel who wants to be a hero.' Nia's eyes lit up. 'Is it scary?' Ms. Vega shook her head. 'Only a little thrilling. The squirrel is brave, like your little fox.' Nia took both books to her corner. She started the last chapters of the fox's journey, and then peeked into her new squirrel book, heart fluttering with excitement. By the time the sun slipped lower, Nia felt much lighter. She smiled at Ms. Vega as she left, holding both books close. A few days later, Nia marched into the library, her finished fox book in one hand and her squirrel adventure almost done in the other. Her little brother bounced beside her, eyes wide. Nia led him straight to the 'Staff Picks' shelf. 'Ms. Vega helps find the best books,' she whispered happily. She couldn't wait to tell him about brave animals, friendly librarians, and the special feeling that comes from asking for help-and finding so many more stories to love.
