Pepper the puppy froze-where did her favorite bone go?
Nia Patel stood on the porch steps. She held a ball. Warm light lay over the grass. The air smelled like cut mint. Pepper's tail flicked, then drooped. The little brown ears wiggled and stilled.
"Want to play fetch?" Nia asked.
Pepper whined and pawed the porch mat. She looked at the yard, then at Nia. She gave a small sneeze and sat.
"Oh," Nia said, soft. "You lost your squeaky bone."
Pepper gave one quiet bark. She nudged Nia's shoe. Her nose went to work, snuffling left and right.
Nia tucked the ball in her pocket. "Okay, partner," she said. "We can find it. We will use a plan."
Nia held up her fingers. "Step one: retrace."
They walked the path Pepper took this morning. From the porch, to the flower bed, to the gate. Nia spoke each place out loud.
"Porch. Garden. Gate."
Pepper followed, sniffing. Her nails clicked on the steps. Her tail swung, slow and unsure.
"Step two: landmarks," Nia said. "Let's count what we see."
She pointed as they walked. "Three tall sunflowers by the fence. The big oak with a low branch. The red bucket by the hose."
Pepper stopped at the bucket and peeked inside. Only water sloshed. She snorted at her own nose.
Nia smiled. "Good check. Now leaf flags."
They picked fallen leaves, bright and crisp. Nia poked each leaf into the ground like a tiny flag. "Flag means 'we checked here,' okay?"
Pepper watched, head tilted. She booped one flag with her nose. It wobbled and held.
"Step three: make a map," Nia said.
She sat on the porch step and pulled out a small notepad. She drew a box for the yard. She made little circles for bushes. She made a star for the oak.
Pepper leaned in so close her whiskers tickled the paper. Nia giggled.
"New helper trick," Nia said. "A rhyme to keep us steady."
She chanted, "Think it through, one, two, two!"
Pepper's ears perked. Nia numbered their tries right on the map. "Try one: porch. Try two: garden. Try two-two: gate," she joked, with a grin.
Pepper gave a happy huff, like a laugh.
"Step four: a grid," Nia said. She drew three tall lines. "Left. Middle. Right. We'll search one part at a time."
They checked the left side first. Pepper dug by a dandelion and pulled out an old stick. She wagged hard and dropped it at Nia's feet.
Nia patted Pepper's back. "Nice find, but not the bone." She breathed in slow and long. "Let's take a deep breath."
Pepper copied with a big puppy sigh. Her body softened. Her tail steadied.
"Step five: smell test," Nia said. "Follow your best nose."
Pepper trotted to the fence and sniffed. She paused, sat, and tilted her head. Her nose pressed low, right by a loose board.
Nia marked the fence spot with a leaf flag. She checked it off on her list. "Retrace, landmarks, map, grid, smell test," she read, tapping each word. "We're doing great."
They searched the middle next. Dirt felt warm under Nia's knees. A breeze moved the sunflowers. Bees hummed like tiny engines. Pepper nosed the soil, then blinked at Nia, unsure.
"Almost there," Nia said. "Let's look smart."
Nia studied her notepad map. The box yard. The star oak. The circle bushes. The tiny flags they had placed. She set the map on her thigh and squinted.
Three leaf flags made a shape. One by the gate. One by the fence. One near the red bucket. Together, they pointed like an arrow.
"Pepper," Nia whispered, excited. "Look. A triangle!" She traced the shape with her finger in the air. It aimed toward the oak's low branch.
Pepper's ears shot up. She looked at the oak. That was her favorite napping spot after burying things.
They hurried to the tree. Cool shade hugged the grass there. A sweet, earthy smell rose from the roots.
Nia knelt and brushed leaves aside. She noticed a small, heart-shaped rock near the roots. "This looks like your secret sign, Pep!" she said.
Pepper stood on the rock, then hopped aside. She dug twice-scritch, scritch. Dirt puffed. She nosed in deep.
Squeak!
Pepper popped up with the blue bone in her mouth. She barked with joy, tail zooming.
"You did it!" Nia cheered. She clapped and laughed.
Pepper bounded in a circle, then pressed the bone to Nia's knee like a prize.
Nia pulled a small box from the porch shelf. She had taped a label on it earlier. It read, "Home." She drew a little bone next to the word.
"New tip," Nia said. "When we're done, treasures go here."
Pepper pranced over and dropped the squeaky bone in the box. She sat tall, chest puffed, the picture of proud.
Nia placed one more leaf flag by the box and added a tiny square on her map. She checked the last box on her list. "All steps complete," she said, tapping the paper.
The sun slid a bit, warm and kind. A robin chirped from the fence. Pepper nudged the ball from Nia's pocket.
"Ready to play now?" Nia asked.
Pepper wagged a yes so hard she almost tipped.
Nia tossed the ball gently across the lawn. Pepper sprinted, paws drumming the grass. She caught it, turned, and trotted back, happy and calm.
They played a soft game of fetch. Between throws, Nia peeked at her tidy map. The leaf flags fluttered like little green hands, saying, You did it.
Pepper curled by the porch, bone safe in the Home box. Nia scratched behind her ears. The day felt bright and easy, like the plan had made space for fun.
