Pip the little robin woke to a sharp ache in her wing. The sky above her bush filled with fluttering wings-her friends were flying south for winter. Pip hopped out, flapping both wings, but the left one drooped and pain stung. She watched her flock grow smaller and smaller, their voices fading to faint peeps. She didn't want them to see her cry, so Pip tucked herself in the bush. The golden leaves swirled around her feet and the wind nipped at her feathers. Each night, she shivered and dreamed of warm sunshine and berries. As days grew shorter, the air smelled crisp and cold. One morning, snowflakes tickled Pip's beak. Her stomach rumbled. She closed her eyes, wishing for something-anything-warm and safe. ## Meeting the Mice 'Is someone there?' a tiny voice squeaked. Pip blinked and saw three mice peeking at her beneath a fern. Mama Mouse had a soft gray coat, Benny wore a red acorn cap, and little Lila blinked wide, curious eyes. 'Hello,' Pip whispered. She looked away, feeling shy and a bit afraid the mice would laugh at her droopy wing. But Mama Mouse only smiled. 'You look cold. Would you like to come in? We have sunflower seeds and a warm burrow.' Pip's stomach grumbled even louder. She wanted to say yes, but the words stuck. Finally, she just nodded. The mice scampered ahead, and Pip followed, one hop at a time. Inside the burrow, soft moss filled a tiny nest just Pip's size. There were crumbs of bread, shiny red berries, and a teapot that smelled like warm oats. Benny wrapped Pip in a leaf blanket while Lila showed her the cosiest spot. ## Wintering Together At first, Pip felt out of place. She didn't want to bother any-mouse, so she tried to do things herself-even when it hurt. But Mama Mouse gently touched Pip's wing. 'Let us help,' she said. 'We take care of each other here.' The mice fed Pip seeds and taught her gentle stretches to help her wing heal. On stormy days, Pip sang robin songs to cheer everyone when the wind howled. When the mice needed to find berries, Pip spotted the best patches, hopping along beside them. At night, she helped tell stories by firefly-light. One snowy morning, Pip wanted to surprise the mice. She lined the burrow's tunnel with dry leaves to keep everyone's toes warm. The mice clapped and danced with joy. Pip felt her heart grow warm, too. ## Spring Sunlight Slowly, Pip's wing grew stronger. Each day, she tried a little more flapping. Sometimes it still hurt, but Benny and Lila cheered her on. On a bright morning, Pip stepped outside with her friends. The sun was warm, and green buds poked through the snow. Pip flapped hard-up, up, up! She lifted off the ground for a moment. The mice squeaked with glee. Pip laughed, dizzy with happiness. She landed beside them, her wings outstretched. This time, she wasn't scared to ask for help. She knew now: helping and being helped made their friendship strong. That spring, as birds sang in the farmhouse trees, Pip and the mice played in the soft grass. Their little burrow was filled with laughter, song, and the promise of new adventures together.
