Sam’s First Big Soccer Tryout

One careful kick at a time

Sam’s First Big Soccer Tryout

Sam's shoelaces trembled in his fingers as he stepped onto the bright, green field for the very first time.

The sun felt warm on his shoulders. Leaves swished softly by the fence. Kids laughed, and cleats clicked on the path. Sam squeezed his water bottle and took a deep breath.

First Practice

Coach Marco clapped his hands and grinned wide. "Welcome, new players!" he called. "We'll learn some basics today. Small steps. Heads up. Gentle taps."

Sam lined up behind bright orange cones. His heart thumped like a drum. When it was his turn, he rushed forward, left foot, right-oops! He mixed them up, bumped a cone, and tumbled to his knees. The cone rolled away like a tiny rocket.

A few kids gasped. One boy giggled. Sam's face warmed, but he popped back up. He brushed off his shorts and gave a wobbly thumbs-up.

Coach Marco jogged over and knelt to Sam's eye level. "Try this," he said, soft and steady. "Tap the ball gently with the inside of your foot. Keep your eyes up. Small steps. Like you're tiptoeing on clouds."

He showed a slow tap-tap, heel down, toe turned in. The ball rolled like it was listening.

Sam tried again. Tap. Tap. Tap. The ball wobbled but stayed close. He smiled and clapped for himself, three quick claps.

"Nice work!" Coach Marco said. "That's the idea."

A girl with a pink headband waited behind him. She stared at her shoes and twisted a braid. "I'm Priya," she whispered.

"I'm Sam," he said. "You've got this." He pointed to the ball and made a tiny cloud-step with his feet. Priya grinned. She tried the taps and made it past two cones. Sam cheered so loud a bird hopped off the fence.

They practiced passes. Sam sent the ball the wrong way twice. He kicked too hard and chased it into the chalk line. Grass brushed his shins. His breath came fast and jumpy. He stopped, counted four slow breaths, and tried the gentle tap again.

After practice, Sam walked home with the ball under one arm. In the yard, he set two old shoes down as tiny goals. He stood between them and tapped the ball left, then right. Tap left, tap right. He counted steady breaths. "One...two...three...four."

A breeze carried the smell of leaves. A dog barked next door. Sam's taps grew smooth and quiet, like raindrops on a porch.

Each afternoon, he practiced again. He kept his eyes up and took small steps. He missed sometimes and laughed, then tried again. He made up a chant in his head. "Gentle, steady, eyes ready." The words bounced with his taps.

Tryout Day

The field looked extra bright on tryout day. Cones dotted the grass like orange stars. Kids stretched and whispered. Priya waved, then tugged her headband into place.

Sam's stomach fluttered like a paper kite. He rubbed his palms on his shorts. "Everyone starts somewhere," he whispered, remembering Coach Marco's voice. "Enthusiasm and effort matter."

He helped Coach Marco set out cones. He lined them straight, heel to toe. He gave Priya a thumbs-up. She gave one back, small but brave.

The whistle chirped. Drills began. Sam ran hard but not wild. He listened to each direction. Tap with the inside. Eyes up. Small steps. He missed a pass and almost tripped. He caught himself, counted four breaths, and tried again.

"Clean stop, Sam!" Coach Marco called when Sam trapped a rolling ball.

Sam felt light, like the sun was inside his chest. He passed to Priya. She stopped it and tapped it back. They grinned at each other without saying a word.

There were more drills. Short sprints. Simple passes. Careful stops. Sam made little goals in his mind. One neat pass. One gentle trap. One steady run. After each one, he whispered, "Yes," and pumped his fist once.

At the end, Coach Marco gathered everyone in a half circle. The grass smelled sweet. A line of clouds floated like marshmallows.

"When I was your age," Coach Marco said, "I could not kick straight. Not even close. My ball zigzagged like a squirrel. I learned to slow down. I learned to tap. I learned to look up. And I kept showing up." His smile was warm and sure.

He held a clipboard. "I'm choosing players for a starter team and a practice squad. The practice squad will grow into the team. What I saw today was heart, focus, and energy."

Sam's shoulders sagged a little. He stared at his cleats. Maybe he would not make anything. Maybe he would just go home and practice with the shoes again.

"Priya Shah," Coach Marco called. "Practice squad. Nice taps and brave tries!" Priya's eyes went wide. She covered a smile with both hands.

Sam felt a tiny hope spark, then flicker.

"Sam Alvarez," Coach Marco said. "Starter team."

Sam blinked. "Me?" He pointed to his own chest.

Coach Marco nodded. "You listened. You helped. You stayed steady. Your bright energy lifted the whole field."

Priya clapped first. Then the others joined in. Sam's heart did a happy kick. He almost lost a shoelace as he hurried to the front.

Later, as the sun slid lower, Sam and Priya walked to the gate. Their cleats clicked softly on the path. Sam balanced the ball on his foot and let it drop.

"See you at practice," Priya said.

"See you," Sam answered. He took a slow breath and smiled. The field seemed even greener now. He tapped the ball once, gentle and sure, and it rolled forward like it knew the way.
