Finn liked things in a certain way. Every art time in Mrs. Chen's class, he picked the blue crayon first. Blue made the best sky, gentle and wide. Finn liked how it spread smooth across paper. He would press gently, making the sky stretch over his simple house and two fluffy clouds. Then, his picture was done. He would sit with his hands folded, waiting for the bell. But today, as Finn reached out, his hand stopped midair. The blue crayon was missing from its usual spot! He looked up. Maya, with dark curls and a big grin, was already swirling blue on her page. Finn's stomach felt twisty. His routine was broken. He fiddled with his shirt button and stared at the crayon box. How could he draw the sky without his blue? Mrs. Chen came by, holding up some clean paper. 'Finn, Maya's borrowing blue. Why not try another color while you wait?' she said kindly. 'Who knows what you'll make?' Finn didn't want to change. But he didn't want to just sit, either. He chose green for the grass and drew a careful rectangle at the bottom. Around him, the table buzzed with talk and laughter. Beside him, Maya was humming as she drew a blue whale with little white bubbles. Finn tried red for the roof. He traced sharp lines, but his heart wasn't in it. He glanced at Maya's picture. It was lively, with swoops of blue and purple and sparkles of pink where bubbles danced. Finn looked at his own work-a quiet house, a patch of grass, empty sky. Just then, Maya leaned over. 'Want to try something?' she whispered. She picked up her yellow and green crayons, rubbing them gently on a scrap of paper. Where they overlapped, a new color appeared-a soft, blue-green, like sea glass. Finn's eyes widened. 'How did you do that?' Maya smiled. 'Mixing is fun. Want to try? You can make the sea, or even a new kind of sky.' Finn hesitated, but Maya slid her crayons over, and Finn pressed them together, drawing swirls. The color looked different, special. He began to color above his house, layering yellow, then green, then a hint of purple. The sky became swirly, almost magical. Finn giggled-a small, excited sound. He added orange for a sunset, pink for clouds, and purple shadows on the grass. His fingers smudged with color, Finn forgot to worry. He drew a pond with frogs, a rainbow on the roof, and birds flying high. His picture felt alive. After a while, Maya reached for a crayon near him. Finn noticed and scooted it closer. 'Here,' he said quietly. Maya grinned wider. Mrs. Chen stopped by again, eyes twinkling. 'Look at that! I've never seen a sky quite like yours, Finn. Tell me about it.' Finn's cheeks felt warm. 'It's not just blue. It's lots of things. I tried some new ways.' 'I can tell,' said Mrs. Chen. As art time ended, Finn and Maya cleaned their colorful fingers together. The crayon box now looked shinier with bits of every color used. When Maya offered blue back, Finn shook his head. 'Let's share it next time. Maybe we can make a picture together.' Finn walked from the art table with light steps, carrying his new picture. It was more wonderful than any sky he'd ever made. He couldn't wait to try again-and maybe, just maybe, he'd leave blue for someone else, too.
