The Little Firefly Who Found Courage

Lila's Bright Night in the Meadow

The Little Firefly Who Found Courage

When the sky went dark, a tiny firefly named Lila was too scared to shine. Lila lived under a wide clover leaf at the edge of a summer meadow. Every night, she peeked out to watch the stars twinkle high above and to listen to the soft music of frogs and crickets. Sometimes, she wished she could join them in their nighttime games. But Lila was shy. She worried that if she let her light glow, the other bugs might laugh or call her too tiny. So she hid beneath her leaf, holding her little glow deep inside. One hazy night, Lila's friends came by. Finn the frog hopped up first, his green skin damp and shiny. 'Lila! We're going on a nighttime walk. Won't you come?' Mei the field mouse stood on tiptoes, her nose twitching. 'We're going to the firefly meadow!' Bruno the beetle clacked his shiny wings. 'It'll be fun. Please, Lila?' Lila peeked out. She wanted to say yes. But the idea of everyone seeing her little light made her wings flutter nervously. She shook her head and whispered, 'I'll watch from here.' Her friends smiled kindly, but Lila saw their hopeful eyes. That made her cheeks feel warm. After a while, the friends began their walk. The moon was soft and full, laying gentle silver across the grass. Lila followed behind, quiet and careful, just in case she changed her mind. Suddenly, a cool fog rolled in from the pond. It curled around the meadow, making everything fuzzy and dim. Finn croaked, 'Where's the path?' Mei's little feet tapped the ground. 'I can't see the stars anymore!' Bruno's shell glimmered in the damp mist. 'Did we pass the creek already?' Lila's heart bounced. She could see her friends blinking, searching the shadows. Their voices sounded small in the thick fog. Lila wanted to help, but her light felt even tinier now. She took a small breath. Her glow flickered-just a little at first. It trembled like a gold coin hiding in the grass. Finn noticed. 'Lila? Is that you? Your light-it's beautiful!' Lila's wings shook. She thought her glow might snuff out, but instead, she took a careful step forward. Her glow grew brighter, lighting a warm circle in the mist. Bruno squeaked, 'I can see! Keep going, Lila!' Lila lifted herself higher. Each flutter made her light a bit bolder. The fog thinned in her golden glow, and the path slowly returned. Finn hopped close, Mei scampered beside her, and Bruno scurried along, all following Lila's shining trail. Soon they reached the old crabapple tree, a sign that their homes were near. Mei giggled, 'Lila, your light led us home!' Finn smiled wide. 'You're a hero!' Bruno wiggled his tiny legs. 'Let's have Lila lead all our midnight parades!' Lila felt new warmth deep in her chest. Her light glowed bright and strong-brighter than it ever had before. She realized her gentle glow wasn't just hers; it could guide and comfort, too. Now, when the meadow is silvery and the air is cool, Lila no longer hides. She leads her friends through the soft grass, her light twinkling warmly under the stars. And when other shy fireflies watch from under clover leaves, she smiles, hoping they'll join the parade soon.
