Ava's Amazing Lunchtime Rescue Quest

Team Lunch sets sail in the cafeteria

Ava's Amazing Lunchtime Rescue Quest

Ava opened her lunchbox and found only a napkin inside.

Her stomach gave a tiny flip. The cafeteria buzzed with voices and trays. Warm pizza smell floated through the sunny room. Ava closed the lunchbox fast and slid it close.

"You okay?" Malik asked. He scooted closer on the bench.

Ava tried a smile. She folded the napkin into a neat square. "I'm not hungry," she said, though her belly made a soft grumble.

Priya set down a little container. Crisp cucumber slices pressed against the lid. "You can have a few," she said, tapping the box. "They are super crunchy."

Jin peeked into Ava's empty lunchbox, then at her face. He reached into his own. "Rice crackers," he said. "They are plain but good."

Zoe wiggled a tiny spoon. "I have a mini yogurt cup," she said. "We could share if we go slow."

Malik held up his sandwich. "It's peanut-free," he said. "I can give half. I like the other half just the same."

Ava's cheeks felt warm. She wanted to hide. She stared at the napkin and blinked hard. "I don't want you to run out," she whispered.

Malik thumped his milk carton against Jin's. "Team Lunch!" he cheered. The little cartons clinked like bells.

Rescue Quest Begins

Priya snapped a purple crayon in half and pushed one piece to Ava. "Let's make a map," she said. She spread the napkin flat on the table. "We're rescuers on a quest. Each food is treasure."

Zoe's eyes lit up. "Our table is the sea," she said. She waved her spoon like a flag. "We sail from island to island."

Jin placed a rice cracker on one corner. "Cracker Cove," he said. He made a tiny wave sound with his lips.

Ava took a breath. Her shoulders dropped a little. She drew a dotted line across the napkin. Her dots made a path. "First stop, Cracker Cove," she said.

Everyone cheered in small inside voices. Malik tore his sandwich half into two neat squares. He set one square on the map. "Sandwich Sands," he said. "Only a little each, so we do not sink."

"Rule of the crew," Priya said, pointing. "Everyone gives just a bit. No one runs out."

Ava took one cracker corner and chewed slowly. It crunched like tiny boots on dry leaves. She smiled for real this time. She drew a wiggly wave. "Next, Cucumber Cliff," she said.

Priya slid over three green coins. Ava and the crew each took one. Cool juice tickled her tongue. She could almost hear seagulls.

Zoe tapped her yogurt cup on the napkin. "Yogurt Lagoon," she said. She dipped the spoon and passed it around, careful and steady. The yogurt felt cold and sweet.

They giggled when Jin made a deep ship horn sound. They whispered, "Heave-ho!" and moved the map down the table inch by inch. Milk cartons clinked again like soft bells over water. The pizza smell turned into the smell of adventure.

Ava's belly felt calmer, like a boat in a quiet bay. She drew a tiny star on the napkin. "Treasure found," she said.

A New Island

The lunch bell would ring soon. Trays clattered. Kids stacked cups. Ava traced the dotted line with her finger. Her smile faded. Her hand went still.

"I didn't give anything," she said. Her voice was small. "I only took from the map."

Malik shook his head. "You drew the path," he said. "That counts."

Ava stood to toss her trash. She grabbed her jacket from the hallway rack. The fabric was cool from the shade. She swung it on-and felt a small bump in the pocket.

She reached in and pulled out a mini box of raisins. The red box looked dusty and proud. She gasped. "A new island!" she cried.

She ran back to the table and set the box on the napkin. Her eyes were bright now. "Raisin Ridge!" she said. She opened the box and shook it gently. Little dark jewels tumbled out.

"Treasure!" Zoe cheered. Jin thumped the table softly like drums.

Ava counted with care. She gave two raisins to Malik, two to Priya, two to Jin, and two to Zoe. She saved two for herself. The raisins were chewy and sweet, like tiny sun-warmed grapes.

"The map is complete," Priya said, grinning.

They cleaned up like a crew swabbing the deck. Napkins swept. Crumbs gone. Milk cartons stacked like neat little towers. The table gleamed.

Ava looked at each friend. She touched the map with her fingertip. "Thank you, Malik," she said. "Thank you, Priya. Thank you, Jin. Thank you, Zoe." She folded the napkin map and tucked it into her backpack.

That afternoon, Ava told her mom the whole story. They stood by the counter, packing for tomorrow. The fridge hummed. Ava placed orange slices into a small container. She added an extra snack and smiled. "For the next quest," she said.

A week later, Malik patted his pockets and frowned. "I forgot my apple," he said at lunch.

Ava's hand went to her backpack. She pulled out the old napkin map. The purple dots still danced across the paper. She set it on the table with a soft pat.

"New island," she said, and lifted a lid. Bright orange slices glowed like little suns. "Citrus Shore!"

The crew cheered. They passed the slices around, just a few for each. Milk cartons clinked. The map slid down the table, brave and crinkly.

Ava watched her friends crunch and laugh. Warm light fell across their bench. Her chest felt steady and strong. She was ready for the next rescue, whenever it came.
