Small steps across a big challenge

Bella's bent wing made a tiny squeak every time she tried to flutter. The sound was soft and squealy, like a mouse yawning.
High above, butterflies spun like petals in the wind. They dipped and rose, bright as little flags. Bella beat her wings fast, just like them. The squeak grew louder.
She tumbled onto a puffed dandelion. Seeds whooshed up and tickled her nose. She coughed, then sighed. "Maybe the sky is not for me," she whispered.
Bella slid under a wide green leaf. It smelled like rain and shade. She watched the tall grasses lean and sway. The blue above seemed far away, like a dream you almost remember.
A red dot peeked under the leaf. "Hello," said Lolo the ladybug. "I heard a little squeak. Was that you?"
Bella hid her bent wing. "I was trying to fly."
Lolo nodded. "I hop in small steps. See?" She lifted her round body and made a gentle hop to a clover. "Short, careful hops still get you there."
Bella tried a tiny hop. Her feet landed soft. The squeak stayed quiet. She smiled a little.
Grass rustled. Brix the grasshopper sprang onto a smooth rock. "Watch this!" He bent his legs, then boinged into a slow breeze. The air slid under him like silk. He landed neat. "Leaps can meet wind halfway," he said.
Bella climbed the rock. She bent her legs and made a small leap. The breeze kissed her wings. She did not shoot up. She drifted in a soft scoop and landed, surprised and safe.
A warm glow bobbed closer. Lumi the firefly blinked like a tiny lantern. "Sometimes light helps me feel steady," she said. "When dusk comes, I glow. It tells me, 'You can do this.'"
Bella looked at her reflection in the sparkling puddle. A dot of sun on the water made her look shiny. She felt a warm spark in her chest.
Buzzing floated from the tall grass. Sunny the bee hovered above a mushroom cap. "Hello, friends," Sunny hummed. "I don't flap fast all the time. I find warm air and ride it up, like an elevator."
Sunny pointed with a fuzzy leg. Heat shimmered over a sunny stone. "Stand there," he said. "Feel the lift."
Bella stepped onto the warm spot. The air rose in soft puffs. She spread her wings and tilted the bent one a little. The lift held her like a gentle hand.
She squeaked once. Then she glided down in a slow curve. Her feet tapped the mushroom cap. Lolo cheered. Brix thumped the rock with a happy tap. Lumi blinked bright. Sunny spun a tiny circle in the air.
"Try again," Sunny said. "Flap slower on one side. Tilt your belly. Let the wind help."
Bella tried from a clover, then a rock, then the wide mushroom. She wobbled, then scooped. Her path looked like loops drawn with a paintbrush. Not straight. Not high. But smooth. It felt like humming.
A frisky breeze swept across the meadow. Grasses whispered. Pollen dust sparkled like gold.
Beside the puddle, a line of tiny ants marched. They reached the edge and halted. The water shivered with ripples. Their leaf boat was too soggy to float.
"Bridge time," said Brix. He dragged a thin grass stem toward the ants. It was long but wiggly. It needed placing, not dropping.
"I can try," Bella said. Her heart ticked fast, but it felt brave. She lifted the light stem with her feet. The bent wing squeaked. She tilted her body and let the breeze hold her.
Down she looped, gentle as a ribbon. She set one end near the first ant. Tiny antennae waved. The ants tapped the stem, then started across in a tiny parade.
A gust puffed the other end away. Bella scooped up again. She rode a warm swirl like Sunny showed her. She flapped slower on her bent side, like Lolo's careful hops turned into air. She made a springy arc, like Brix.
Loop by loop, she placed the stem back, soft and exact. Ants crossed, one by one. Lumi drifted beside her, glowing like a friendly star. The light helped Bella see the ripples ahead. She curved around them, smooth and steady.
"Almost there," Sunny called. "You've got the lift!"
Bella's last loop was her best. She slid through a sweet pocket of air and lowered the stem's far end to dry ground. The final ant stepped off and waved tiny thanks.
The breeze calmed. The puddle stilled. Bella hovered, then touched down on the warm stone. Her friends gathered close.
"You didn't go the highest," Lolo said, grinning. "You went the kindest."
Brix thumped the rock again. "Perfect aim," he said.
Lumi blinked a happy pattern. "You glowed on the inside," she said.
Sunny buzzed near her ear. "You found your elevator," he hummed.
Bella looked up at the same blue sky. It did not seem far now. It seemed open, like a song with room for many notes.
She spread her wings. The bent one still squeaked. The sound made her smile. She tipped and rose in a soft loop, then another. Her path curled like vines on a fence.
She wasn't flying wrong. She was flying Bella-style.
The meadow watched, bright and quiet. Seeds drifted. Ants cheered in tiny clicks. Bella's heart felt light and brave, and the sky felt like home.
