Finley the fox always stood at the very front of every line, puffing his cheeks and tapping his paw. He looked like a little orange blur as he hurried from place to place, hoping he could get there before anyone else. Today, the sun was shining over the woodland village. At school, Finley hurried to the door, stretching his nose forward so he'd be first inside. When it was time for playground, he zipped past everyone, his tail a fluffy flag behind him. The other animals watched Finley with wide eyes. Timmy Rabbit wiggled his nose and stepped back when Finley burst past. Tara Turtle was careful, but Finley still brushed past her shell. At snack-time, Miss Maple, their gentle teacher, said, 'Finley, remember to let others have a turn.' Finley tried to wait, but his paws tingled and his whiskers twitched. Being first just felt right. One sunny Saturday, the whole woodland village gathered for the Meadow Fair. There were games, balloons, and the biggest, twistiest slide anyone had ever seen. Animals lined up, chattering as they waited. Finley darted up, squeezing to the front. Suddenly, one soft cry floated above the crowd. He turned and saw little Hazel Squirrel, looking very small. She rubbed her eyes. 'I keep waiting, but I always end up in the back,' she sniffled. Finley's tummy gave a tiny twist. He watched Hazel, then glanced at Timmy Rabbit and Tara Turtle. They didn't look happy either. Miss Maple knelt beside Finley. 'How about we try the Let-It-Flow Line today?' she suggested with a smile. 'This time, each animal gets a helper behind them to cheer for their turn!' Finley's ears perked up. He liked cheering-but letting someone else go first? That was new. Miss Maple clapped her paws. 'Let's begin!' She pointed to the line. Finley ended up behind Timmy Rabbit. His heart raced. But he remembered Miss Maple's warm eyes and squeezed his paws together. Timmy was next for the slide. Finley took a deep breath and shouted, 'Go, Timmy, go!' Timmy beamed and zipped down the slide, his ears flapping with joy. Then it was Hazel's turn. She peeked back at Finley. He gave her a big thumbs-up with his paw. Hazel's eyes sparkled as she glided down, giggling all the way. Finley felt a small, warm sunbeam grow in his chest. Cheering was fun! He noticed how happy everyone looked when he clapped and waited patiently. When it was finally his own turn to slide, he saw all his friends cheering for him. Their shouts and laughter made him feel light inside-as if he could float! After that, Finley tried the Let-It-Flow Line with every game. He even helped Tara Turtle reach the top of the bouncy castle and showed Hazel how to ring the bell at the dunk tank. As the fair ended, Finley sat in the grass, grinning. The meadow buzzed with happy chatter. This time, he wasn't just racing to be first-he was making new, bright memories with his friends. Finley gently tapped his paw, but not because he couldn't wait. He was excited to see what would happen next, now that he knew waiting could bring so much more than just being first.
