Hassan had been practicing all week to make his spinning robot shine at show-and-tell, but one quick bump made a tiny crack-and his smile disappear. Hassan clutched his robot tight as he waited in line by the classroom rug. Sunlight danced on the robot's shiny button eyes. He grinned and bounced on his toes, thinking about how everyone would clap when they saw his robot spin. When it was Hassan's turn, he marched to the front. He placed his robot on the table and gave its tall red hat a careful twist. The robot began spinning, little arms whirling in a bright blur. A few of the kids giggled. Some clapped already. Suddenly, a classmate named Marcus reached into his backpack behind the table. Marcus's elbow knocked the corner of the table. It made a small bump, but it was just enough. The robot tipped over and hit the hard desk with a crack! A tiny arm snapped right off. Hassan's heart thudded loud inside his chest. His face turned red and hot. He stared at the broken robot, eyes wide and filling with tears. Hassan's hands shook. Nobody spoke. It was so quiet, Hassan could hear his own hard breathing. Even Ms. Li put a hand to her mouth, surprised. Marcus whispered, 'I'm sorry, Hassan. I didn't mean to...' but Hassan looked away. He grabbed his robot and rushed back to his seat. He put his head down so no one could see his tears. His proud feeling had popped like a bubble. That night, Hassan sat at the kitchen table while the smell of cinnamon bread drifted from the oven. His toy robot sat beside him, its cracked arm dangling. Hassan tried not to look at it, but he couldn't help it. He poked at the broken piece, feeling his throat tight and eyes prickly. His father sat across from him, strong brown hands folding up an old napkin. 'It hurts, doesn't it?' his dad asked softly. Hassan nodded and wiped his nose on his sleeve. 'Sometimes,' his dad said, 'things break even when no one means it. Accidents happen to everybody.' 'But Marcus broke it. He should've watched out,' Hassan mumbled. 'Yes,' said his dad, 'but if you hold on to that hurt forever, it only makes your heart sad. Forgiving doesn't make the crack go away. But it helps us fix what we can and feel better inside.' He smiled and tapped the robot gently. 'Maybe if you forgive Marcus tomorrow, you could feel a little lighter.' Hassan thought about it all night. He hugged his robot close while he slept. The next day at school, Hassan saw Marcus at his cubby. Marcus looked worried and fidgeted with his sleeves. Hassan could feel his heart thumping again. He walked over and took a deep breath. 'Hey, Marcus?' Hassan said, voice quiet but steady. 'I... I was really upset. But I know you didn't mean to. Let's try to fix it together?' Marcus's whole face lit up. 'Really? I'm sorry, Hassan. I want to help!' At recess, they brought the robot to Ms. Li. Soon Kira brought some silver tape, and Diego found a button that matched. Everyone took turns helping, holding pieces and wrapping tape. Ms. Li cheered as the robot's arm wiggled back into place. Hassan even drew a big smile on the robot with a marker. As they watched his robot spin again-maybe a bit wobbly, but brave-Hassan felt something warm inside his chest. It felt better than being angry. He grinned at Marcus, and Marcus grinned back. The whole class cheered. That afternoon, Hassan walked home hugging his fixed robot close. The shiny new button on the arm made him smile. His chest felt light, as if a happy sun was shining right where his hurt had been. He realized that sometimes, being brave meant letting something go-and that forgiveness made both him and his robot feel brand new.
