Oliver wanted a pet more than anything in the whole wide world. He asked every morning, hoping his parents would say, 'Yes, today!' But each time, his mom or dad would smile and say, 'Not yet, Oliver. Pets need lots of care.' One sunny Saturday, Oliver stared out his window and sighed. All his stuffed animals sat in a row on the sill-a rabbit, a turtle, a crab, and even a small toy snail. 'Maybe,' he thought, 'I can practice with you all first.' Oliver picked up his fluffy rabbit and set a toy carrot in front of it. Then he gently spread out a soft leaf as a blanket for his tiny plastic turtle. He found a shiny, empty shell in the backyard and gave it to his toy crab, tucking it in carefully. After lining up his animals, Oliver grabbed a big sheet of paper and wrote 'PET CARE CHART' with a blue crayon. He made little boxes for feeding, cleaning, and checking on his toys. Every time he remembered a task, he stuck on a gold star. Sometimes, he forgot. One afternoon, dust gathered around the turtle tank. Oliver frowned, grabbed his toy broom, and swept every crumb. Then he said, 'I'm sorry, Turtle,' and gave it an extra soft leaf for comfort. Most days, Oliver's chart filled up with stars. Some days had empty spots or a sticker in the wrong box. He never gave up. If he missed a box, he tried again the next day. One evening, Mom peered into Oliver's room. She saw gold stars shining and each animal tidy in its spot. Dad soon noticed too, when Oliver tiptoed past, gently lifting the toy crab into its shell and whispering, 'There you go.' The next morning, Mom called, 'Oliver, put on your shoes! We have a surprise.' Oliver jumped up, curious. Outside, the sun was warm and bright. They walked, hand in hand, to the friendly pet shop on the corner. Inside, glass tanks lined the walls. Tiny creatures scuttled and peeped. A gentle lady with curly hair smiled. 'You must be Oliver,' she said. 'Would you like to meet Shelly?' In a clear tank under a lamp, a real hermit crab peeked out from her shell. When Oliver pressed his nose close, Shelly disappeared inside. He giggled. 'She's shy!' Carefully, Oliver scooped up some soft sand, making a little hill in the tank. He watched Shelly slowly climb over it. The pet shop lady showed Oliver how to fill her tiny water dish and clean up leftover food. Oliver listened hard and nodded, thinking, 'I can do this.' That afternoon, Shelly came home. Oliver set her tank near his window, right beside his old care chart. He used gentle hands and moved slowly, just like the pet shop lady showed him. After feeding time, Shelly crawled out and blinked at him. Oliver felt proud. But that evening, hurrying to supper, Oliver forgot to close Shelly's tank lid. When he remembered, he dashed back-Shelly was still safe, but crawling near the edge! With a racing heart, Oliver gently tucked her in and closed the lid. He drew a reminder card and taped it above the tank: 'Close the Lid!' The next day, he asked Dad to help make the latch snug. That night, Mom and Dad peeked into Oliver's room. They saw his bright care chart, the clean tank, and his careful reminder. In the morning, they smiled and said, 'Oliver, you've shown us you're ready.' Oliver grinned and gave Shelly a shy wave. Patiently, he waited until she peeked out and wiggled a claw. It took time, but the best things always do.
