Two Kids, One Lost Puppy

A Warm Springtime Adventure

Two Kids, One Lost Puppy

Maya found the little brown puppy shivering under the maple tree and held him like a warm secret. His nose was chilly and his ears drooped, but when Maya cradled him close, he licked her cheek with a soft, tickly tongue. Leo spotted the puppy's wiggly tail and hurried over. 'Woah! A puppy!' he cheered, dropping his backpack. He knelt beside Maya and scratched the puppy's belly. The puppy's tail thumped against the sidewalk. Maya blinked her gentle eyes. 'He looks lost. See? He's shaking.' She stroked the soft fur behind the puppy's ears, feeling the tiny heartbeat flutter in her hands. Leo grinned wide. 'Maybe he's meant to be my new best friend! He can chase balls in my yard.' But Maya hugged the puppy a little tighter. 'Or maybe he can nap with me by my window. He looks sleepy.' The puppy squirmed, happy in both pairs of arms. With quiet smiles and bright hearts, they tucked him into an empty box behind Maya's front bushes, making a nest of Leo's jacket and Maya's scarf. For a minute, the world felt filled with puppy giggles. Soon, Maya noticed something shiny on the puppy's neck. 'He has a tag!' she whispered. Leo leaned in. There was a silver tag scratched with funny letters, and a blue ribbon, torn at the end. 'He belongs to someone,' Maya said softly. Leo's smile faded just a little. 'Maybe we should help find his home.' Maya nodded. The puppy yawned a tiny yawn as if to say, 'Let's go!' ## The Great Neighborhood Search Maya ran home and found bright markers. Leo dashed to the garage for tape. On a big sheet of paper, Maya drew the puppy with floppy ears, and Leo printed, 'FOUND: Brown Puppy, loves cuddles!' They taped posters on the corner pole, near the playground, and outside the shop that sold bubblegum balls. The puppy, now wrapped in Maya's scarf, sniffed every step of the way. People peered out of cars, waved from porches, and one neighbor gave the puppy a treat, which he gobbled with a happy crunch. At the park, the puppy wiggled loose and chased a swirl of maple leaves. Leo darted after him, laughing, but tripped in the grass. Maya scooped up the puppy and smiled shyly at Leo. 'Your turn to carry him,' she said, handing the puppy over. But when Leo carried the puppy to the next house, Maya's lip trembled. She missed his warm bundle already. Leo noticed and gently placed the puppy back in Maya's arms. 'We can take turns,' he grinned. The friends started to giggle. Their voices mingled with the puppy's playful yips and the soft rustle of the spring breeze. ## A Surprise at the Corner Shop As they passed the corner shop, Maya stopped short. Something in the window caught her eye-a faded flyer with a picture of a little brown puppy, a blue ribbon, and a big word: 'MISSING.' Leo pressed his nose to the glass. 'That's him!' he squeaked. Before they could plan, a quiet voice called from behind, 'Excuse me... is that Barkley?' A girl about their age stood nearby, her eyes worried but hopeful. She wore glasses and a blue hairclip that matched the ribbon on the puppy's collar. The puppy perked up, wiggling from Maya's arms and dancing over to the girl. The girl knelt and hugged him close, her face crinkling into the happiest smile. 'Barkley ran away yesterday,' she whispered. 'We've been looking everywhere.' Maya and Leo's hearts felt lighter and warmer. The puppy-Barkley-nuzzled Maya's hand, then licked Leo's cheek. ## A Visit to Remember Barkley's family came to the shop and thanked Maya and Leo, their faces shining with gratitude. They invited the kids to visit Barkley anytime. Maya smiled, knowing she'd always remember naptimes with Barkley in her lap. Leo pictured tossing balls in the yard while Barkley chased after them. The friends waved goodbye, hands tingling with puppy kisses and hearts full of pride. As they walked home, their shadows danced side by side under the spring sun, and warm laughter floated behind them, as bright and sweet as new leaves.
