Lila and the Blue Big Brave

Small steps make big courage

Lila and the Blue Big Brave

Lila's toes stopped at the pool's edge, where the water looked as wide as the ocean. Her towel hung from her shoulders like a red cape. Kids splashed and whooped. Lila held her cape close and did not move.

Coach Rivera knelt beside her. His voice was steady and calm. "See this blue?" he said, pointing to the ripples. "This is the Blue Big Brave. It likes tiny steps."

Aisha waved from the shallow side. "Come splash with us!" she called. Marco and Jamal made silly faces. Water sparkled on their cheeks like tiny stars.

Lila's fingers tightened on her towel. Her knees felt wobbly, like jelly on a plate. "I want to," she whispered. "The water looks so big."

"We start small," Coach Rivera said. "Sit with me on the edge. We'll count ten tiny splashes with our feet. Ready?"

They sat. Their heels kissed the water. Lila took a breath and began. "One, two, three," they counted, toes flicking like minnows. Drops landed cool on Lila's shins. By ten, her shoulders loosened a bit.

The next day, the sun baked the deck warm. Coach set a shallow bucket on the first step. "Dragon puffs," he said, grinning. "Bubbles make dragons friendly."

Lila bent close to the bucket. Her nose tickled from the chlorine. She puffed her cheeks and blew. Soft bubbles shivered and popped like tiny drums. The class cheered every pop.

Aisha leaned in and hummed a note. "Hum like this," she said. "It keeps the bubbles smooth." Lila tried. Hummmmmm. Round bubbles rose in a steady line.

Marco tapped the rim. "I count slow, like a turtle," he said. "One... two... three." Lila followed his beat, slow and sure. Jamal stood on the step beside her. "I'm right here," he said. Their shoulders touched.

On Wednesday, Coach held up a sign. It had wobbly letters and a star. "Quest time! Starfish Float!" he announced. "Arms wide, legs wide, tummy up."

The water lapped and shushed. Lila's stomach fluttered. She tried to lie back but sat up fast. Her breaths came short, like little hiccups.

Coach dipped a leaf onto the surface. It rocked, then rested, bright green on blue. "Water holds this leaf," he whispered. "It can hold you, too."

Lila watched the leaf drift. Something in her chest untied a knot. She slid her ears near the water. The cool crept up her neck. She lasted one breath, then two, then popped up. Aisha clapped. Coach raised a thumb. Lila smiled, wet hair sticking to her cheeks.

After a break, they did Alligator Walk. "Hands on the wall, feet on the floor," Coach said. "Chomp, chomp, slow and strong." They moved along the side, fingers gripping rough tiles. Lila's legs pushed the water aside like soup. She liked the feel of the strong chomp-chomp.

Thursday was Treasure Scoop. Colorful rings sank just an arm's reach away. The water cooled Lila's wrists. She reached, wiggled, and caught a purple ring. It slid smooth into her palm. Jamal whooped and splashed his feet like drumsticks. Lila laughed and reached for a red one.

Then came ear time again. Lila froze. The world went quiet except for drip, drip. Her breath held tight like a knot in a shoe.

Coach sat on the step so their eyes matched. He pulled a small, faded ribbon from his pocket. The words "I DID IT" were written in crayon. "Someone gave me this," he said softly. "I was little, and the water felt huge. My heart thumped like a marching band. Tiny steps helped me. Tiny steps helped a lot."

Lila touched the soft ribbon edge. It felt like old paper and sunshine. She glanced at the leaf floating near the lane rope. Her chest eased. She lowered one ear, then the other. Cool hush filled her world. She heard her bubbles sing, hummmmmm, like bees.

Bridge to the Island

Friday arrived with bright sky and giggles. A floating mat waited two small steps from the wall. "Bridge to the Island!" Coach called. "Two steps, then a giggle."

Lila's heart drummed in her ribs. Her toes curled over the edge. She remembered dragon puffs and turtle counting. She remembered the leaf and the ribbon.

Coach held out both hands. "I've got you," he said. "You do the steps." Aisha, Marco, and Jamal stood nearby. They swayed like friendly trees.

"One step," Lila said. Her foot found water, then mat. The mat wobbled. Her knees bent like springs. "Two steps," she said. She landed soft on the mat. It rocked, but did not flip. The water held her. A laugh burst from her mouth, bright and light.

Cheers rose around the pool. Lila's towel-cape hung on the bench, forgotten. Her arms spread wide. "Starfish time!" she called. She lay back slowly, ears wet, face warm with sun. One breath. Two breaths. Three whole breaths. She floated, quiet as the leaf.

When she stood, water ran down her cheeks. It tasted a little salty on her lips. Her friends clapped and tapped the water like rain. Coach's eyes shone. He pressed the old ribbon into her palm. "Borrow it for today," he said. "Make your own someday."

Lila walked out with wet hair and a big smile. Her flip-flops squeaked on the warm deck. She glanced back at the calm, blue water. It did not look as wide as the ocean now. She whispered into her towel-cape. "Tomorrow's brave starts with one small step." And her feet felt ready.
