When the moon climbed high over the quiet houses, Maya snuggled in her bed and closed her eyes. But the soft dark wasn't still. Wah! Wah! Wah! Baby Oscar was crying again, just across the hall. Maya groaned and rolled over, pulling her blanket tighter. She tried putting her pillow over her head, but Oscar's cry wiggled right through. His tiny voice felt like a squeaky balloon that wouldn't stop. She tried counting sheep: One... two... Oscar cried. Three... four... another wail. It was no good! Maya shoved off her blanket and stomped to the kitchen. 'Mom,' Maya grumbled, rubbing her eyes, 'I hate all this noise. Can't Oscar be quiet like me?' Mom didn't look mad. She kneeled down, right at Maya's level. Her hug was warm and her sweater smelled soft, like clean laundry. 'It's hard to hear, isn't it?' Mom said gently. 'But did you know, you used to cry at night, too?' Maya blinked. 'Me? Really?' Mom smiled and pulled out a little photo tucked on the fridge. It was crinkled at the corners. In it, a tiny red-faced baby was curled in a yellow blanket, mouth wide open. 'That's you, Maya! You needed lots of snuggles and songs before bed.' Maya stared at her baby self. Her heart thumped slow and warm. 'I want to help Oscar feel safe, like I helped you,' Mom said. 'There's a trick. Want to learn?' Maya nodded. She felt curious now. Mom walked her to Oscar's room. The nursery glowed softly from a star-shaped nightlight on the shelf. Oscar's face was squished and pink. His hands opened and closed like little starfish. Mom whispered, 'Try singing a gentle lullaby. That always helped you.' Maya peeked into the crib and saw Oscar's favorite bear under the blanket. She picked it up and tucked it into his arms. Then, she took a slow breath. Her voice was shaky, but she began to hum the lullaby her mom used to sing: 'Rock-a-bye, little one, safe in your bed, Moonbeams are glowing, dreams in your head.' Oscar made a soft hiccup sound. He didn't stop crying, but he quieted a bit. Maya kept humming, just a little louder. She rubbed his fuzzy head gently and watched his tiny eyelids flutter. Next, she rocked the crib side to side, just like Mom showed her, counting slow belly breaths. One, two, three... Oscar's cries turned to small sobs, then whispers. Finally, he gave a shaking sigh and went quiet. The room felt hushed and peaceful, like snow outside. Maya blinked. She felt proud-and a little surprised that she did it. She tiptoed back to her room, tucking herself under her covers. Next morning, Maya drew a big star on her favorite sticker. She colored it bright yellow and wrote, 'Big Sister Helper' in neat, careful letters. She placed it above her bed, right next to her baby photo. Maya smiled, thinking of how her small hands could comfort someone. Tonight, maybe she could help again-not just Oscar, but herself too.
